What is Spiritual Direction?

It’s been said that God is present in every human experience. But sometimes we struggle to find evidence of God’s nearness in our lives. In spiritual direction, we take time to stop, look at your life, and take note of what we see. You may bring a question, a challenge, or a joy that you want to spend more time with. Or you might not know ahead of time what you need out of our session. This practice of prayerful, monthly conversation serves as training in recognizing and responding to the Holy in your everyday life.

A typical session may start with lighting a candle to signify God’s presence with us. After that, we’ll find the mixture of prayerful silence, talking, wondering, and listening that works for you at that time. Every session is different, and every person is different. Some spiritual directors give “homework” every time; I rarely do. But you might leave our session with practices to try or a desire to pray more deeply about something that arose.

What won’t change is this: God will be stirring in that time, and I commit to being a trustworthy, intentional listener, holding space for whatever questions, emotions, dreams, and longings emerge.
